Sensex Climbs Above 14700; Capital Goods, Banks Gain

Buying activity intensified across the board on Friday as sentiments turned bullish with the positive opening of European markets and on hopes of onset of monsoon back home.

At 2:40 pm, Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex was at 14699.80, up 292.58 points or 2.47 per cent. The index touched an intra-day high of 14710.22 and low of 14373.57.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty was at 4354.15, up 112.30 points or 2.65 per cent. The broader index hit an intra-day high of 4359.20 and low of 4243.95.

BSE Midcap Index was up 2.22 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index gained 1.72 per cent.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Capital Goods Index moved 4.04 per cent higher, BSE Bankex gained 3.71 per cent and BSE IT Index moved up 3.09 per cent. BSE Healthcare Index was down 1.50 per cent.

Biggest Sensex gainers comprised ICICI Bank (6.6%), Sterlite Industries (5.68%), Larsen & Toubro (5.17%), BHEL (3.37%) and Infosys Technologies (3.25%).

Sun Pharmaceuticals (-11.82%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (-4.42%), Tata Steel (-2.56%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (-0.65%) were the losers. Market breadth on BSE showed 1651 advances against 971 declines.

European markets moved higher led by gains in banks and commodities space. FTSE 100 was up 0.99 per cent, CAC 40 gained 0.66 per cent and DAX moved 1.05 per cent higher.
