US Stocks : The Week Ahead (May 26-29)

US stocks are expected to remain volatile in the holiday shortened week.The U.S. markets are closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. On the earnings front, AutoZone (NYSE: AZO), Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR), Dell (NASDAQ: DELL), Tiffany & Co (NYSE: TIF) are scheduled to release quarterly reports.

The relatively busy economic calendar kicks off with the release of S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index (March)and Consumer Confidence (May) on Tuesday. Existing Home Sales (April) is reported Wednesday.Durable Goods Orders (April), weekly initial claims data and new home sales (April) are due for release on Thursday.Friday will see the release of GDP-Prelim (Q1), Chicago PMI (May) and University of Michigan Sentiment-Reuters Consumer Sentiment data (May).

Investors are likely to focus on General Motors (NYSE: GM) as according to media reports, the Obama administration is preparing to send troubled automaker into bankruptcy as early as the end of next week. The company is facing a June 1 deadline to work out its issues with creditors if it wants to avoid a bankruptcy filing.
